Valheim Hildir's Request: three dungeons, three chests
Smouldering Tomb, Howling Cavern, Sealed Tower — and the Dvergr wardrobe behind the door.
Hildir is a Dvergr merchant who arrived in the Meadows with the 1.0 launch on 9 September 2026. She sits at a small camp near the starting area, wearing a red and white dress with a green and red necklace, and she has one thing on her mind: her stolen goods. Raiders hit her camp and scattered her inventory across three special dungeons. Complete Hildir’s Request and she opens her chest tiers — Brass, Silver, and Bronze — each packed with Dvergr clothes and miscellaneous items you cannot find anywhere else.
This guide covers how to start the quest chain, locate the three dungeons, handle the heavy chests, and what waits in each reward tier. Hildir is the only source of several cosmetic and utility items in 1.0.
Finding Hildir
Hildir spawns in the Meadows after you have visited at least one other biome. She does not appear on the map; look for her camp in a clearing with a table, a few crates, and the Dvergr sitting beside a fire. She is east or northeast of most spawn points in a typical seed, but her exact location varies. If you cannot find her, explore more of the Meadows — she spawns once you have killed Eikthyr or explored at least two major Meadows landmarks.
Interact with the table in her camp to receive Hildir’s Request, which populates your map with three special dungeon locations: Smouldering Tomb, Howling Cavern, and Sealed Tower. Each dungeon holds one chest type. You only need to complete one of each dungeon type to finish the chain.
The three dungeons
Smouldering Tomb — contains the Brass Chest. This is the first dungeon most players reach. The Smouldering Tomb is a fire-themed underground area found in the Black Forest or Swamp borders. It is guarded by Surtlings and other fire-based enemies. Bring fire resist mead or stay mobile. The Brass Chest inside contains the base tier of Hildir’s stock.
Howling Cavern — contains the Silver Chest. This ice-themed dungeon appears in the Mountains biome. Navigate the frozen tunnels, avoid the Frozen Prison’s projectile attacks, and locate the Silver Chest. Frost resist mead is not optional here — the cold damage stacks quickly in tight corridors. A silver-grade weapon with frost or spirit damage helps against the ice-themed enemies.
Sealed Tower — contains the Bronze Chest. This dungeon appears in the Plains biome, usually near fuling camps. The Sealed Tower is a vertical structure with multiple floors, traps, and fuling guards. Take the Bronze Chest from the top floor after clearing the surrounding camp. Padded armor or at least a black metal shield helps manage the fuling numbers.
All three dungeons have multiple spawns per world. You only need to complete one of each type. The dungeons scale loosely to your world progression, but bring your best current gear to each.
The chests
Each chest is large and heavy. None of them fit through a Wood portal. They will not budge — the game physically blocks them. However, they can pass through a Stone portal. Build a stone portal at each dungeon exit and send the chest through before you continue exploring. If you already have Casual portals enabled on your world modifiers, stone portals are still your only option for the chests themselves.
If you somehow drag a chest to a wood portal, the game shows the blocked icon and the chest stays behind. This is not a bug — it is a deliberate block. Always use stone portals for chest transport.
Once you have all three chests at Hildir’s camp, place each one on the corresponding pedestal. The quest marks them clearly once you approach. This triggers the reward unlock for that tier.
Reward tiers
Brass Chest tier — unlocks first. Contains basic Dvergr clothes, belts, and a few utility items. This is the starter wardrobe.
Silver Chest tier — unlocks after returning the Silver Chest. Better items: higher-tier Dvergr armor pieces, accessories, and clothing with improved stats. The Silver tier is where Hildir’s catalogue becomes genuinely useful.
Bronze Chest tier — unlocks after returning the Bronze Chest. The full catalogue: rare Dvergr cosmetics, all clothing variants, and any remaining items. Complete all three to see everything Hildir sells.
Hildir’s shop refreshes periodically like Haldor’s. Check back between major expeditions to see what new stock appeared.
What Hildir sells
Hildir’s inventory is pure Dvergr aesthetic and utility:
- Dvergr merchant clothes (hats, coats, trousers, shoes)
- Dvergr belts and accessories
- Some items unique to her catalogue that do not appear anywhere else
- Cosmetic overrides that change your character’s look without armor stats
She does not sell weapons, metal ores, or building materials. Think of her as a fashion and cosmetics vendor for your Viking who wants to look like they have been trading with Dvergr for years.
After Hildir
Hildir’s quests are standalone content, not a prerequisite for any biome or boss. Once you have the chests delivered and the tiers unlocked, her value is the ongoing shop. Check her stock between major milestones.
For progression, the next logical step after handling Hildir is the bosses guide — she sends you to dungeons that overlap nicely with early Black Forest and Mountain exploration anyway. Her dungeons are not mandatory for progression, but the loot and the experience make the detour worthwhile.
For who carries what into each dungeon in co-op, use the players hub. One player handles the portal, one handles the chest, one handles aggro — that split works across all three.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Viking questions.
Where do I find Hildir in Valheim 1.0?
Hildir spawns in the Meadows after you visit at least one other biome. Look for a Dvergr camp with a table and crates, usually in a clearing. She is not on the map; explore the Meadows to find her.
What do Hildir's dungeons contain?
Smouldering Tomb (Brass Chest, fire dungeon, Black Forest/Swamp border), Howling Cavern (Silver Chest, ice dungeon, Mountains), and Sealed Tower (Bronze Chest, vertical Plains tower with fuling guards).
Can I portal the chests back to Hildir?
No for Wood portals — the chests are physically blocked. Yes for Stone portals. Build a stone portal at each dungeon exit. The chests do not fit through Wood portals in any circumstance.
What rewards do I get from Hildir?
Three reward tiers unlock progressively: Brass (base Dvergr clothes), Silver (better clothes and accessories), and Bronze (full catalogue with rare cosmetics). She is the only source of several cosmetic items.
Is Hildir required for progression?
No. Hildir's quests are optional content. She is purely a cosmetics and fashion vendor. All three reward tiers are vanity items, not power progression.
How many dungeons of each type exist per world?
Multiple. There are several Smouldering Tombs, Howling Caverns, and Sealed Towers per world. You only need to complete one of each type to finish the quest chain.
