Valheim Every cooking station, every recipe
From the first campfire to the Deep North Smoker — the full food ladder.
Valheim food is not decoration. Your three food slots are the health bar, the stamina bar, and — from Mistlands onward — the eitr bar. Cook the wrong plate and Bonemass becomes a two-hour fight. Cook the right ladder and every boss is a parry plus a mace swing. This page is the complete cooking reference: stations, recipes, upgrades, and why the Smoker in the Deep North matters.
For ranked combos and what to eat in each biome, use the food tier list. For farms and comfort, use the building guide. This page is the craft bench and the cauldron.
Cooking stations overview
Valheim has six cooking facilities, each unlocking a tier of recipes:
| Station | Biome | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking Station | Meadows | Basic roasted meats and fish |
| Iron Cooking Station | Swamp (Forge) | Better meats, serpent, lox |
| Cauldron | Black Forest (Forge) | Soups, stews, sausages, jam |
| Food Preparation Table | Swamp (Workbench) | Breads, pies, feasts |
| Stone Oven | Mountain (Artisan Table) | Baked goods from Preparation Table |
| Smoker | Deep North (Workbench) | Deep North smoked foods |
All stations that cook food need to sit over a fire. The cauldron sits over a hearth, not a campfire. Cauldron add-ons (spice rack, butcher’s table, pots and pans, mortar, rolling pins, smoker) attach to the cauldron itself and also need a nearby workbench with the right biome materials.
Cooking Station — Meadows basics
The Cooking Station is the first kitchen. Drop it over any campfire. It handles raw meats:
- Cooked Meat — raw meat, 20 min, +35 HP / +12 stamina
- Grilled Neck Tail — neck tail, 20 min, +25 HP / +8 stamina
- Cooked Deer Meat — deer meat, 20 min, +35 HP / +12 stamina
- Cooked Boar Meat — boar meat, 20 min, +30 HP / +10 stamina
- Cooked Wolf Meat — wolf meat, 20 min, +45 HP / +15 stamina
- Cooked Chicken Meat — chicken meat, 20 min, +60 HP / +20 stamina
- Cooked Hare Meat — hare meat, 20 min, +60 HP / +20 stamina

- Cooked Asksvin Tail — asksvin tail, 20 min, +70 HP / +24 stamina
- Cooked Volture Meat — volture meat, 20 min, +70 HP / +24 stamina
Honey, berries, carrots, onions, mushrooms, cloudberries, and magecaps can be eaten raw. They are not cooking recipes — they are inventory food you hold for emergencies.
Iron Cooking Station — Swamp upgrade
The Iron Cooking Station unlocks at a Forge. It handles the same basic list but produces slightly better results for some meats. Build it with iron and chain. Most players skip it as a separate station and use the cauldron for the real cooking work.
Cauldron — the real kitchen
The cauldron is where the food ladder starts. It sits over a hearth (not a campfire) and upgrades in stages. Each upgrade adds new recipes. Upgrade order matters if you are short on resources: do spice rack first, butcher’s table second, pots and pans third.

Deep North Smoker
The Smoker is the final cauldron upgrade (Deep North workbench). It processes Deep North ingredients into smoked foods:
- Smoked moose meat
- Smoked seal blubber
- Other Deep North smoked ingredients
The Smoker turns moose and seal materials into shelf-stable food with good duration. This is critical for long Deep North expeditions where a campfire is hard to keep lit in a blizzard. Keep a stock of smoked foods in your Deep North base chest.
Station placement rules
- Cooking Station, Iron Cooking Station, and Cauldron all need to sit over a fire.
- The cauldron specifically needs a hearth (the stone fireplace), not a regular campfire.
- Cauldron add-ons need a nearby workbench with the correct biome level.
- The Food Preparation Table and Stone Oven do not need fire underneath.
- Smoker needs to be adjacent to the cauldron and a Deep North workbench.
What to cook first in each biome
Meadows: Cooked meat and grilled neck tail until you have deer. Berries and honey are the backup slots.
Black Forest: Queen’s jam (raspberries plus blueberries) at the cauldron. Carrot soup once you find carrot seeds.
Swamp: Sausages are the first real upgrade. Turnip stew when turnip farms exist. Black soup before Bonemass.
Mountain: Onion soup / wolf skewer. Eyescream for stamina-heavy wolf hunts.
Plains: Lox meat pie, blood pudding, bread. Barley and flax farms turn the plains into a bakery.
Mistlands: Seeker aspic, yggdrasil porridge, misthare supreme — the first real eitr plates. Mages need one eitr slot always.
Ashlands: Fiery svinstew, scorching medley, spicy marmalade. Fire resist mead is not food, but it is the tax you pay before eating.
Deep North: Smoked moose, smoked seal blubber, lingonberries. The Smoker is the key infrastructure for the final biome.
For specific ranked combos, see the food tier list. For farms, see the building guide. For why three slots matter more than one perfect plate, see the food guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Viking questions.
What cooking station do I start with in Valheim?
The Cooking Station in the Meadows. Place it over a campfire. It handles basic roasted meats. The Cauldron comes next at a Forge in the Black Forest.
What is the best cauldron upgrade order?
Spice Rack first (Swamp), Butcher's Table second (Mountain), Pots and Pans third (Plains). Mortar, Rolling Pins, and Smoker follow as you reach later biomes.
Can I portal cooked food?
Yes. Cooked food is not metal or ore. Default portal rules block ores, not stew. Cook in advance and stock the next biome's chest before you sail.
What is the Deep North Smoker for?
The Smoker processes moose meat and seal blubber into smoked foods with long duration. Essential for Deep North expeditions where campfires are hard to maintain in blizzards.
How do feasts work in Valheim?
Assemble at the Food Preparation Table. Use a Serving Tray (140 coins from the Bog Witch) to serve. One feast serves ten portions to the group, lasting 50 minutes.
What is the difference between the Cooking Station and the Cauldron?
Cooking Station roasts raw meats. Cauldron makes soups, stews, sausages, and jams with better stats. The Cauldron is the real progression tool; the Cooking Station is the tutorial.
