Valheim How to get the grappling hook
Find a Hook in Infested Mines, craft at the Black Forge, swing in Deep North tunnels.
The grappling hook is the 1.0 tool people actually search for. It is not a Deep North drop. You unlock it in the Mistlands, craft it at the Black Forge, and then take it north so Winding Tunnels and the Gates of Mörkhalla do not eat a whole evening. Iron Gate shipped it with Valheim 1.0 on 9 September 2026: unlimited uses, no durability bar, no stamina tax per shot, a short wind-up between throws.
Do not walk into the Deep North without one. Village pits, frostcore shafts, and Mörkhalla climbs assume you can stick a wall and reel. If you are still in the Meadows, finish Getting Started first. If you have not beaten The Queen, this page is your Mistlands shopping list, not a shortcut around biome order.
Where the recipe unlocks
Pick up a Hook. That one item teaches the recipe. Hooks sit in Dvergr treasure chests inside Infested Mines in the Mistlands. Look for hidden stone doors with blue glyphs — they are easy to skip if you only fight Seekers in the main halls. PC Gamer and later 1.0 write-ups both found stacks of three in those side rooms; you only need one Hook per craft.
Bring mist vision (Wisp Fountain after Yagluth), a carapace or eitr-weave set from the armor list, and a portal at the mine mouth. Mines are vertical. If you already have a friend’s hook, you can still loot extras for a spare. Chests also hold Black Cores and other Mistlands junk; take it, then leave.
Crafting list
Craft the grappling hook at the Black Forge (Mistlands artisan station, not the Meadows workbench). The 1.0 recipe is:
- 10 Yggdrasil Wood — chop Yggdrasil shoots with a black metal axe. Each tree dumps a mix of woods; you will need more than one trunk.
- 10 Refined Eitr — sap extractors on Ancient Roots plus Soft Tissue from giant remains, refined at the Eitr Refinery.
- 4 Mandibles — Seeker Soldier drops. Anyone who finished carapace armor already has a pile.
- 1 Hook — the Infested Mine chest item above.
Some roundups say “Forge.” The station that actually lists the recipe after you pick up a Hook is the Black Forge. If the line is missing, you do not have a Hook in inventory or the station is not upgraded. Repair the hook at the same bench; 1.0 does not drain a durability bar on throws, but the item can still take world damage if you are sloppy.
How to throw, reel, and let go
Equip it on the hotbar. Left-click starts a short load, then fires a line at the surface under your reticle — walls, cliffs, marble, timber, Deep North ice. The first yank pulls you in; you hang if you do not follow up. Jump twice (or tap jump again, depending on your controls) to reel along the chain. Right-click releases.
There is a delay before the next shot. That delay is why people die: they fire in a panic, miss, and have nothing while a Seeker or Elaking closes. Practice on a Meadows longhouse wall before you trust it over a Winding Tunnel shaft. Controller users get the same load-then-fire; do not mash.
The line wants a solid surface. Snow drifts, thin ice, and foliage waste a shot. In the Deep North, shovel a lip if you need a reliable stick point, then swing. Unlimited use does not mean unlimited aim.
Why Deep North dungeons demand it
Winding Tunnels hide under two-story village ruins. Frostcores grow on the walls. You drop into pits, then need a way back out with moulds and Intricate Key parts. A portal at the bottom does not help a teammate still on the ledge.
Gates of Mörkhalla are worse: vertical, hostile, and the place you break Malicious Ice to start Jotun invasions. Snazzy’s 1.0 overview and later dungeon write-ups both tell you to leave with the hook equipped, not in a chest at the dock. Nornathread and invasion materials are not worth a naked climb.
Mistlands cliffs are the training course. If you still fall to death in marble, you are not ready for ice. Pair the hook with a stamina-heavy food plate; hanging is cheap, missing is not.
What the hook is not
It is not a Deep North exclusive. It is not a Forsaken drop. It is not a console spawn you should use on a character you care about — codes will disable achievements. It does not replace a longship or a portal network. It does not let you skip Fader. Craft it after The Queen’s materials are flowing, take two, and keep one in the Deep North hall.
When Kall’s prison is the next problem, the hook still matters for the route, not the arena. Read Kall Fimbulbringer for the blood, the bowl, and the phases. For the rest of the frozen biome loop, stay on Deep North.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Viking questions.
Where do I find the Hook item in Valheim 1.0?
Infested Mines in the Mistlands. Open hidden blue-glyph stone doors and loot Dvergr treasure chests. One Hook unlocks the recipe.
What is the grappling hook recipe?
At the Black Forge: 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, 4 Mandibles, and 1 Hook. All of that is Mistlands, not Deep North.
Does the grappling hook use durability?
No. 1.0 throws are unlimited, with a short delay between shots. Right-click releases. Practice before Deep North shafts.
Do I need it before Kall Fimbulbringer?
You need it for Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla, which feed Intricate Keys and Malicious Blood. See Kall Fimbulbringer.
Can I skip Mistlands and buy a hook in the north?
No. There is no Deep North vendor for it. Follow biome order through The Queen, then craft two.
