Valheim Deep North Survival Guide

The Deep North is Valheim’s eighth biome and the reason 1.0 exists. Iron Gate AB and Coffee Stain Publishing shipped it on 9 September 2026 with the full release, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions, and the last Forsaken: Kall Fimbulbringer. It is a frozen coast of mesas, buried villages, ice sheets, and storms that look pretty until the first Gammeltroll throws a tree at your longship.

Do not beach here in padded Plains gear. Beat Fader in the Ashlands, bring fire-capable weapons, Deep North food, a shovel, and a grappling hook crafted in the Mistlands. Iron Gate recommends a new world for 1.0. Old saves keep your halls, but Deep North generation only fills unexplored chunks. If you already wandered the empty north in Early Access, those tiles stay empty. Launch notes sit on Valheim 1.0.

Landing, storms, and snow

Sail a longship along the northern ice, not a raft. Storms greet you on purpose. Ice is slippery. Snow must be cleared to build — the shovel is a progression tool, not a toy. If a ghost piece will not sit, dig. Pin a portal on rock, not on a drift that will eat the door. 1.0 adds steep 67° roof pieces, drawbridges, snow lanterns, and new hearths so a hall can shed drift; the integrity colors from the building guide still apply.

Frostbite here is not the old Mountain chill. Mountain wool is not enough. Bring frost resist meads until Deep North armor exists, then replace the mead with the set. Sit for Rested in a shoveled hut before every tunnel run.

Gammeltrolls, Ember Charges, Bloodgold

Gammeltrolls are the largest overworld creatures in the game, not bosses. They throw trunks with a long wind-up. Kite, do not hug. When one dies, the body petrifies. It does not spill a tidy loot bag. Craft Ember Charges (seal pelt plus embers) at a forge, throw them at the statue, and break off Petrified Tissue. The same charges also crack ice sheets and blocked passages, so craft more than you think.

Smelt Petrified Tissue in a Blast Furnace (the Plains / Mistlands-era station) with coal to get Bloodgold. That ingot is the Deep North weapon and armor spine. Moulds from Winding Tunnels and the Gates of Mörkhalla plus Bloodgold become casts; seat the cast in a Frost Foundry and feed Liquid Frost from a Frigid Kiln (ice in, frost out). That chain is every Nord axe, sword, greatsword, dagger, atgeir, bow, crossbow, mace, spear, and knucklechain. Skip a step and you are swinging flametal in a blizzard.

Fauna, farms, and dungeons

Seals live on the shoreline with their pups. They are easy pelts and blubber: Ember Charge fuel and food. Moose roam forests and village edges. Tame them with lingonberries and you have a rideable mount for the overworld. Moose meat, hide, and sinew feed the same ladder. Kale, oats, poteitr seeds, and lingonberry bushes are the farm crops; plant them in a shoveled, fenced plot, not on ice.

Elakings dig. You will meet them in Winding Tunnels and sometimes at night on the surface. Eyeless Ones in those tunnels drop Long Claws. Barka, Hexen, Krigen, and pulp variants show up in Mörkhalla and village pits. Treat every two-story ruin as a dungeon entrance. Hidden pits in village halls lead to Winding Tunnels where moulds and Intricate Key parts hide.

The Gates of Mörkhalla are the endgame dungeon loop. Craft Intricate Keys (mould → Bloodgold cast → Frost Foundry) to open doors. Inside you halt Jotun pressure and collect Malicious Blood. You will run this more than once. Three keys, three invasions, three bowls of blood is the usual tax before Kall.

Kall Fimbulbringer

Find a Deep North Vegvisir to mark the Aesir Passage. Offer three Malicious Blood at the Strange Bowl to open the jotunn’s prison. The dedicated Kall Fimbulbringer walkthrough covers Intricate Keys, Jotun invasions, multi-phase reports, and the Valhalla cinematic. Fire, mobility, Bloodgold Nord gear, and a shoveled arena beat a stubborn frost sword. He drops Sacrificial Blood and a Crown Jewel toward the Crown of Valheim. If the group wipes, reset food, sit for comfort, and do not run back naked.

Bring a multiplayer plan: one player holds the portal, one holds Ember Charges, one holds the keys. Moose are for the overworld, not the prison. After the kill, you can still farm Gammeltrolls for Bloodgold and finish the 80-plus new build pieces. The biome is the last page of the biome book, not a side continent you dip into for screenshots. If your old world never generated it, start the new seed Iron Gate asked for and sail north only when Fader’s relic is already on a stand.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Viking questions.

Do I need a new world to play the Deep North?

Iron Gate recommends one. Existing worlds only generate Deep North in unexplored chunks. See Valheim 1.0.

How do I get Bloodgold?

Kill a Gammeltroll, blast the petrified body with Ember Charges for Petrified Tissue, then smelt it in a Blast Furnace. Ember Charges need seal pelt and embers.

What are the Frost Foundry and Frigid Kiln?

The Kiln turns ice into Liquid Frost. The Foundry finishes Bloodgold casts into Nord weapons and armor. Moulds come from Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla.

How do I summon Kall Fimbulbringer?

Mark the Aesir Passage with a Vegvisir, gather three Malicious Blood from the Jotun / Mörkhalla loop, and offer them at the Strange Bowl. Bosses has the full roster.

Can I ride a moose?

Yes. Tame a moose with lingonberries. Seals are not rideable; hunt them for pelt and blubber used in Ember Charges and food.

Why can’t I place building pieces on the snow?

You have to shovel snow first. Steep 67° roofs and drawbridges are new 1.0 pieces; the rules in Building still apply.
