Valheim Situational tiers, not one true ranking
Weapons, armor, and food lists that change with every biome.
How to read these lists
Valheim does not have a single PvP ladder. An S-tier iron mace in the Swamp is a B-tier stick against Moder if you never land a hit in the wind. This Tier List Hub splits gear into three lists so you can rank for the biome you are standing in, not for a global DPS spreadsheet.
Jump to:
- Weapons tier list — melee, bows, atgeirs, staves, Nord / Bloodgold
- Armor tier list — leather through flametal and Deep North sets, including move-speed penalties
- Food tier list — three-slot combos, eitr meals, and Deep North ingredients
S means “bring this here.” A means “excellent if you already crafted it.” B means “fine while you farm the next metal.” C means “leave it in the chest unless you need the special effect.” Nothing is F-tier if it still kills Greylings; we just stop recommending it once the next forge exists.
Progression beats raw numbers
The metal ladder is still the spine of 1.0: wood and flint → leather → bronze → iron → silver and wolf → black metal and padded → carapace or eitr-weave → flametal → Bloodgold / Nord. Skipping a rung with console spawns (see console commands) teaches you nothing about parry timing. Ranking a Bloodgold atgeir above a flint spear is obvious; ranking a root harnesk above bronze against ticks is the useful kind of exception.
Damage types matter more than item level:
- Blunt for Bonemass and many swamp undead.
- Pierce for trolls, and for bows that stay safe on a kiting line.
- Fire for The Elder, Greydwarves, and anything that hates a torch.
- Frost / lightning / poison / spirit / slash each have pockets. Deep North Nord weapons can take Frostfire or Thunderblood infusions; those are not automatically better than a clean physical roll.
Armor is a stamina tax. Fenris stays high on mobility maps. Carapace and flametal win when you must trade hits with Seekers or Charred. Eitr-weave is S for staff users and C for a pure mace tank. The armor list calls those tradeoffs out instead of pretending one chestpiece wins every screenshot.
Food is the third list because a padded set with Meadows berries is worse than iron with sausages. You eat three foods at once. Mix a health-heavy plate, a stamina-heavy plate, and a flex slot (more HP, more stamina, or eitr once Mistlands is online). Deep North adds lingonberries, kale, moose, and seal; details live on the food list and the food guide.
Rank by biome, then by role
Meadows and Black Forest care about cheap blunt and a bow you will not cry over losing. Swamp cares about poison resist, blunt, and iron. Mountains care about frost resist and silver. Plains care about deathsquito range and black metal. Mistlands splits melee carapace versus eitr mage kits. Ashlands is heat and flametal. Deep North is frostbite, Bloodgold crafts at a Frost Foundry, and Kall Fimbulbringer at the end of the Deep North guide.
Co-op changes the sheet. A dedicated tank in Protector-style heavy gear can hold aggro while a Vanguard bow and a Caller staff delete the elite. Solo players should bias stamina and resists. If your crew runs Casual portals or No Map, read world modifiers before you copy a streamer’s inventory.
Re-rank after each Forsaken kill. The bosses guide and biomes guide tell you which resist mead and which weapon type the next region wants. Use this hub as the table of contents, not as a single stacked S-to-C dump that pretends a flint axe belongs on the same row as a Nord greatsword.
When two items look equal, keep the one you can repair at the station you actually built. A “meta” flametal sword in a chest on the far side of a default-portal metal lock is worse than the black-metal blade on your belt. Default worlds still block ores and ingots through portals unless you relax that slider.
Lists will move when Iron Gate ships balance hotfixes after 1.0. Treat S-A-B-C as a snapshot for current biomes, then trust a weapon that clicks with your stamina bar over a stranger’s letter grade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Viking questions.
Is there one true Valheim weapon ranking?
No. Rank by biome and damage type. Start with the weapons list and move letter grades when you change regions.
Should I upgrade armor or food first?
Food. Three strong meals often add more survivability than the next metal shirt. See the food list and food guide.
Where do Deep North Nord and Bloodgold items sit?
Do movement penalties change armor grades?
Yes. Fenris-style speed can outrank heavier chests on kiting maps. The armor list calls out stamina tax versus raw armor.
How often should these tiers update?
After major patches. Watch the updates hub and the 1.0 notes when Iron Gate retunes Ashlands or Deep North.
