Valheim Three slots, one cooking ladder
Health, stamina, and eitr foods, plus the meads each biome actually needs.
Valheim does not have a health regen stat you can ignore. Your three food slots are the health bar, the stamina bar, and later the eitr bar. Eat poorly and Bonemass looks unbeatable. Eat the current biome’s ladder and the same fight is a parry plus a mace. This page is how the slots work, which stations to build, and which dishes to chase as you walk biome order. Ranked recipes live on the food tier list.
Cook before you explore. A Rested buff from the hall plus three current foods is more survival than a new helmet. Keep a stack on the hotbar; controls will not eat for you mid-combo.
The three slots
You can have three foods active. Each dish is tagged toward health, stamina, or eitr (Mistlands onward), with a duration and a regen rate. Eating a fourth food replaces the one closest to running out, not the one you meant to replace — watch the icons. Stacking three stamina berries in the Meadows is how you get one-shot by a troll. Mix: one health-heavy, one stamina-heavy, and a third that fills the gap. When eitr weapons come online, one slot becomes an eitr dish and you accept a smaller health pool.
Tasty mead is not food. It is a stamina-regen buff that sits beside the three meals. Health meads, stamina meads, eitr meads, and resist meads are emergency buttons, not dinner. You can sip them with a full stomach.
Raids and bosses should always start on fresh timers. Sit, eat, then walk through the portal. If a timer has thirty seconds left when Fader screams, you will eat a Meadows mushroom in panic and lose two hundred health.
Stations: fire, cauldron, oven, kettle
A cooking station over a campfire handles meat and tails. A cauldron on a hearth cooks soups, stews, sausages, and most of the real ladder. Upgrade the cauldron with spice rack, butcher’s table, pots, and the later add-ons; those pieces are recipe gates, same as workbench upgrades. The stone oven (iron, after the Swamp) bakes breads and pies. The meat platter and serving tray from 1.0 help a ten-player hall; they do not replace the cauldron.
The mead kettle plus fermenters is the chemistry lab. Frost resist for Mountains, poison resist for Swamp, fire resist for Ashlands, tasty mead always, lingering stamina for long sails. Fermenters take a real-time wait. Brew before the expedition, not on the altar. Honey is the bottleneck; keep several bee hives on a Meadows roof where raids are boring.
Farms matter from Black Forest onward. Carrots, turnips, onions, barley, flax, and later Mistlands and Deep North crops want a cultivator, a fenced plot, and a biome they actually grow in. Barley does not grow in the Meadows. Plan a Plains farm you can portal to (seeds and crops can portal; the ore still cannot).
Biome food ladders
Meadows: raspberries, mushrooms, cooked meat, grilled neck tail, honey. This is the Getting Started plate. Hunt necks if deer keep running.
Black Forest: queen’s jam (raspberries plus blueberries), cooked deer, carrot soup once you find carrot seeds in villages. Boar farms start here.
Swamp: turnip stew, sausages (entrails, raw meat, thistle). Poison resist mead is a food-adjacent requirement. Do not enter a crypt on Meadows berries.
Mountains: onion soup, wolf skewers, eyescream. Frost resist mead until wolf fur exists. Cooked wolf is a stamina step up, not a reason to skip onions.
Plains: lox meat, blood pudding, bread, salads. Barley and flax are the farm. Deathsquitos punish anyone still on carrot soup.
Mistlands: seeker aspic, misthare supreme, yggdrasil porridge, stuffed mushrooms — the first serious eitr plates. Mage staves starve without them. Carapace tanks still want a health-heavy trio and only one eitr dish if they do not cast.
Ashlands: fire-region meats, spicy pies, and fire resist meads. Eat before you beach. The boiling sea does not care about your Meadows honey.
Deep North: cooked moose meat, cooked seal blubber, lingonberries, kale and kale chips, fish soup, baked poteitr, lingonberry juice. These are endgame numbers. Pair them with Bloodgold armor and do not walk Kall on Ashlands leftovers. Moose and seals are also materials; see Deep North.
What to put on the bar
For exploration, bias stamina so you can run, jump, and block. For boss attempts, bias health so a slam is not a corpse run. For mage loadouts, lock one eitr dish and accept the squish. Always carry the resist mead of the biome you are standing in. Always recook before a longship night; serpent fights are stamina checks, not HP checks.
If two dishes look close, open the food tier list and pick the one whose timer matches the run. A slightly weaker meal that lasts longer is better in Sunken Crypts than a pie that expires in the second room. Ferment extra tasty mead. The group that sits, eats, and sips before the Vegvisir is the group that hangs the trophy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Viking questions.
How many foods can I eat at once in Valheim?
Three. Mix health, stamina, and later eitr. Rankings are on the food tier list.
When do I get a cauldron and oven?
The cauldron is an early hearth craft; upgrades unlock with biomes. The stone oven needs iron from the Swamp. See Biomes.
Which mead should I brew first?
Tasty mead, then poison resist before the Swamp, frost resist before the Mountains, fire resist before Ashlands. Kettle plus fermenters, under shelter.
Do I need eitr food if I do not use magic?
No. Spend the third slot on health or stamina until you equip eitr weapons. Mages should read Weapons alongside this page.
What food should I bring to Kall Fimbulbringer?
Deep North plates — moose, seal, kale, poteitr — plus fire-leaning meads. Prep the biome on Deep North and Bosses.
